Tammy Lam: Seminarian and Office Manager

Tammy was born in Los Angeles and has lived in Southern California for most of her life, but she lived in Federal Way for six months in 2007 before returning to LA to care for her widowed grandmother.  In 2017 she and her husband, Vic, moved from Alhambra, California, to Federal Way and came to CLC.

She attended CSU Los Angeles, where she studied child development and special education.  She is working on her MDiv at United Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia through a distance learning program.

Tammy’s mother was a Muslim and her father is a Buddhist, so faith has been understood as important for her from an early age.  Many people who “planted seeds” in her life influenced her own journey of faith.  Her neighbor who took her to his church, her friend’s mom inviting her to a church potluck, going to church with friends, and visiting churches on her own all have been part of these influences.

Her favorite movie is “I am Sam.” Tammy leads and supports many other ministries at CLC as well as being “up front” on Sunday.  She is the CLC Office Manager, leads book and Bible studies, leads weekly “Let’s Pray Together” times on Zoom and Facebook Live on Saturdays, brings caring moments to fellowship such as the monthly birthday celebration, and often visits people who can’t attend worship to bring friendship, prayer, and communion.

Tammy says of worship leading, “it’s important to me because it provides the opportunities for me to share the Good News with others.  It’s empowering and humbling at the same time."

Tammy’s favorite quote is by Theodore Roosevelt:  “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”  Tammy embodies that care and thinks CLC does too!  She says, “People should be part of the CLC community because this is a place where people can feel nourished and cared for.  We know you by name!”

Mary H: Worship Leader

Mary was born in Maine, has lived in Washington on and off since 1981, and has been part of the CLC community since 2014.  She brings rich life experiences with her, having lived in Alaska, California, Georgia, New York, Germany, Norway, and Japan!   Mary has an undergrad degree from PLU and a Master’s from UAA.  She has taught English Conversation in Japan, guided tours in Alaska has been a managing director for a local airline, and is currently in real estate sales.  Fun fact: Her second cousin Joe Runyan won the Iditarod race in 1986!

Mary loves music of all kinds, sings in the CLC choir, and is an accomplished pianist.  Her favorite movies are Desperately Seeking Susan, The Martian, and Hidden Figures.

The most meaningful parts of worship leading, Mary says, are to add energy into the service and to write inclusive prayers that are meaningful to the congregation as a whole.  “I find #1 easy because I’m an extrovert, and #2 is tough and keeps me humble and vulnerable.”

Mary says:  “People should be part of the CLC community to be embraced by a loving community and feel God's grace in many ways, large events and small deeds, loud noise (usually in tune) and quiet fellowship, welcoming handshakes and gentle understanding hands, and lots of laughter!”

Ann Jaeger: Worship Leader

Hailing from the Valley of the Sun (Phoenix, Arizona) I followed the love of my life to Washington via Northern California and South Australia. After retiring from a 28-year career as a physical therapist, I started to become more involved in activities at Christ Lutheran Church. In addition to Altar Guild and Worship Leading, ministries focused on care of the elderly/shut-in and those who are incarcerated are close to my heart.
Growing up, my family instilled in me positive values patterned by their unconditional love. But I didn't grow up attending church. To say that worship is invitational is to summarize the genesis of my faith life. In college, I was invited to worship at the Lutheran Campus Ministry. Mortified that I would stand up, sit down or sing at the wrong time, lay leaders demonstrated how liturgical worship could be joyful rather than making me feel conspicuous. I gradually came to depend on this Sunday night service to inspire me through the rest of the week. I was invited to join the church choir, which rapidly became one of the high points of my week. A friend, who later became my husband, invited me to pray. He encouraged me to overcome my timidity by offering that prayer was not a performance but a heart-to-heart with God. Now, "I pray because I cannot help myself. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn't change God. It changes me!" (C.S. Lewis)

When someone invites you to worship, there are no ulterior motives. We don't invite so that we can increase our membership or pad our coffers. We want to share with you the joy that is worshiping God: through song, through prayer, through liturgy and communion.
